John was fortunate to grow up in a Christian home; his parents were Baptists. He continued to worship in local churches as he moved with job changes and with the United Reformed Church after he was married. As an accountant, his financial skills were often called upon.

He joined Pinner Baptist Church in 2013 and was soon appointed Secretary of the Finance and Property Committee. He is an active member of the Kaleidoscope seniors group, together with his wife Margaret.

His interests are mainly sport and he attends Chelsea Football club (with his younger son, Stephen) and Hampshire at cricket; Margaret supports Middlesex. They enjoy regular visits to local concerts and theatres.
